Haste the Day, Dreamer, Album Review

Artist: Haste The Day

Album: Dreamer

Released: Oct 2008

Almost as soon as I realised another Haste The Day album was out I had extremely high hopes, being as I rate the other albums so highly. The band can be described and ball-parked into a variety of different genres and when people find out that they are a Christian band they automatically associate it with bands like Underoath.
As soon as the album begins you notice a variety of different elements involved, it has obviously metal influences that directly affects many of the guitar riffs, mixed with blistering hardcore breakdowns and unbelievably melodic singing. This may put some listeners off, but if you like many of the "metalcore" bands of today you should definitely like Haste The Day.

The opening song of the album "68" wastes no time in introducing a band that can easily be loved or hated. Even if people don't appreciate the music you can see how the band has improved over all of their albums. The song gets off to a very heavy start but then quickly settles into some melodic singing, throughout the song there is a switch between heavy and melodic. Once you make it to the end of the song you realise why people describe them as a hardcore band when you are practically punched in the crotch with a brain busting breakdown that perfectly ends the song and sets a tone for the rest of the album.

The next few tracks on the album are basically what you'd expect once you've heard the first song. However, this doesn't mean that everything sounds the same, it's more the case that nothing really tops the opening track. Until "An Adult Tree" straight away you remember the reasons why the last album was so amazing, the band have an uncanny ability to make their songs sound epic. The beginning is reminisant of "Stitches" from the previous album, yet somehow sounds nothing like it. The song has the perfect mix of heavy and soft sections which makes for a song that is easy to listen to, easy to get into, easy to sing along to.

Once "An Adult Tree" had finished I thought that nothing could top it. Then out of nowhere the song "Babylon" knocked my socks off straight away there is an amazing mix of metal and hardcore. Again, another song that completely blows me away comes next as soon as the beat comes in you know that you either want to be throwing your body around in a mosh pit or headbanging to an extreme amount. This tone stays the same throughout the rest of the album, invoking some unknown energy into your body that just makes you want to move.

Finally, the album comes to an end with an acoustic track. The song isn't too bad, but for the fans of the band that don't really appreciate the acoustic genre this will come as an unwelcomed surprise. However, in my opinion the song is good as an end to a mainly heavy album and it truly shows the bands diverse ability in music. Overall I rate this album 4/5.

This was a review written by me in 2008, I thought id share it with you all.
